Valentine's Day--sexy reading list

The SexSmarts reading list

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and as the creators of SexSmarts, we feel compelled to post something about it. There’s all this pressure on Valentine’s day…you’re supposed to have a date, go out to a fancy dinner, buy roses, chocolates, or even jewelry, and have fabulous sex. That’s a lot for a mid-week Wednesday night! So, in the spirit of the fun, educational, and entertaining approach of SexSmarts, we're in our hat(s) for another, sexy way to celebrate - erotica. Some might call it just plain reading, we call it sexy.  Of course, everyone should have a copy of our cult classic SexSmarts, but there's so many wonderful writers and stories to explore...

Sharon Marcus, who edited SexSmarts, compiled a list of sexy books from around the world. Pick one up, and add a little steam to your V-day.

Ancient Guides
These uninhibited guides to sex are combinations of erotica, graphic sex manual, and poetry.
The Carnal Prayer Mat, Li Yu
An erotic story of the exploits of an insatiable young man, including sex competitions and even a penis enlargement. Written in the mid-1600s.

Kama Sutra, Vatsyayna
This Indian guide to sexual etiquette includes detailed and uninhibited paintings and descriptions of sexual positions. Written sometime between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.

The Perfumed Garden, Sheikh Nefzaoui
Often called the Tunisian Kama Sutra, this book, written in the mid-1600s, provides detailed suggestions on sexual positions and remedies.

Classic Literature
Something lusty for every taste…

120 Days of Sodom, Marquis de Sade
This author, who gave his name to sadism, wrote this 18th-century erotic saga of a group of libertines that gathers to narrate and enact every conceivable combination of lust. You might also want to rent Quills, a movie about the Marquis.

Delta of Venus; Little Birds, Anais Nin
Many credit these tasteful, sensual and explicit stories with creating a new market for women’s erotic fiction.

Fanny Hill/Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure, James Cleland
An 18th century story of an innocent young woman who receives a rapid sexual education and becomes the successful madam of a brothel.

Fear of Flying, Erica Jong
The70s bestseller about a woman’s experiments in sexual liberation.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover, D.H. Lawrence
This often graphic novel about a married woman’s sexual awakening with a groundskeeper radically changed how modern literature approached sex.

My Secret Life, “Walter”
The still-unknown author of this tome wrote an exhaustive account of his sexual exploits in Victorian England.

The Pearl

A few publishers have reprinted several issues of this Victorian magazine that combined limericks, dirty jokes, melodramatic romances, ribald tales, and spanking stories.

Tipping the Velvet, Sarah Waters
A lively romp through late Victorian London. A young woman cross-dresses as a man, has a stint as the kept lover of a wealthy widow, and finally finds true love among socialist reformers.

Story of O, Anonymous
This classic S&M story recounts a woman’s gradual enslavement within a sinister and closed sexual universe created by her lover and his friends.

Venus in Furs, Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch
The term masochism comes from Masoch, whose novel recounts a man’s burning desire to submit himself to a cold and domineering woman.

Vox, Nicholson Baker
The classic phone sex novel, Baker’s Vox is a dialogue between a man and a woman who swap sexual fantasies, reminiscences, and desires.
